Abstract

As one of the typical safety-critical systems, the chemical process industry (CPI) is congested with high-risk industrial processes, usually prone to the so-called multi-hazard coupling scenarios. One of the toughest challenges is analyzing the mutually amplified phenomena between various hazards, known as “multi-hazard coupling effects”. Despite the increasing attention devoted to the emerging research field, there still is no systematic and comprehensive review to summarize and overview multi-hazard coupling studies in CPI. In our work, 184 relevant grey- and peer-review literature are extracted and analyzed to systemize knowledge, identify research advances, and investigate future perspectives. To be specific, the following three research objectives are proposed: (1) To develop an interdisciplinary integration of fragmented literature that is applicable to a broad range of multi-hazard coupling scenarios related to CPI; (2) To expound the coupling hazard-formative mechanism on typical multi-hazard scenarios in CIP; (3) To investigate the existing methodologies on different topics related to multi-hazard coupling effects. A two-part systematic and comprehensive review on more studies under the inclusive interdisciplinary integration of multi-hazard coupling scenarios was obtained to achieve the proposed three research objectives, with providing academics the picture of the inter-connections among different categories of studies and help the researchers to identify the research advances and future perspectives in this field. Compared to domino accidents and Na-tech events, the study of multi-hazard coupling is still in its infancy. There is still a fertile field for future research. Such a multi-disciplinary problem requires to be studied from environmental to technological and social aspects. Although this review provides a macroscopic and systematic framework for multi-hazard coupling research, a large number of high-quality studies are still needed to fill in the research gaps. The hope is that this work can provide some help for the development of the theoretical system of multi-hazard coupling effects. This document is a technical report, which is written to support the two-part literature review: “Multi-hazard Coupling Effects in Chemical Process Industry: Part I Preliminaries and Mechanism (DOI: 10.1109/JSYST.2022.3182994)” and “Multi-hazard Coupling Effects in Chemical Process Industry: Part II Research Advances and Future Perspectives on Methodology (DOI: 10.1109/JSYST.2022.3182983)”.
