Abstract

The number of non-tenure track (NTT) job opportunities is on the rise. Students are more likely than ever to consider NTT positions at some point in their career. This chapter discusses these diverse opportunities, from part-time adjunct to full time visiting positions, and strategies for navigating them. In this chapter, we argue that those considering NTT positions need to understand a number of general principles to strategically maneuver the NTT market and to maximize the utility of NTT placements. We detail and differentiate types of NTT jobs and discuss strategies making NTT positions useful in reaching vocational objectives. This is especially important given unique challenges in NTT opportunities. Despite these difficulties, NTT positions may provide opportunities for professional development and future career success. This chapter prepares students to make difficult career and vocational decisions by equipping them with strategies to choose and succeed in NTT work.
